April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month:
Local Business Woman Takes Action
April 24, 2008 Holly Springs, NC—Theresa Murphy of Silpada Designs raised more than $100 on April 24, 2008 to help assist the one in four women who are victims of domestic violence each year. The funds raised by Mrs. Murphy were donated to Interact of Wake County.
Located in Raleigh, the mission of Interact is to “provide safety, support and awareness to victims and survivors of the crimes of domestic violence and sexual assault.” Interact is a private, non-profit organization that is funded by the United Way and community donations. Through the help of their 150 volunteers, Interact provides services, including crisis intervention, counseling, shelter, and education, to more than 10,000 Wake County residents each year.
When Theresa Murphy learned that April was Sexual Assault Awareness month, she decided to use her business know-how to take action and help support Interact. When asked about the fundraiser, Mrs. Murphy stated, “I’ve been so fortunate in my own life, that I wanted to use my skills in a way that would give back to the community. Since my business is selling jewelry through home parties, I realized that raising money to help women in need was the way to do this. We had a lot of fun at the fundraiser: I’m thrilled at what my hostess and I have been able to donate to Interact: it is such a worthy organization.”
